The Best Gift – A poem written for us by Zoe Cannell (Manx Bard 2020).

Christmas is the time for giving, buy for loved ones carefully, as we consider others’ wishes, choose for them attentively, adore to watch a young child’s face unwrap a longed-for toy and exchange with one another, symbols of true peace and joy.

A man gave ME the gift of life; his earthly breath had gone and now his heart – it beats as mine. So, through me, he lives on. I hadn’t met this gent. We never knew our fate would be to walk together on a journey in a special harmony.

I agonised while waiting, all hope teetered on the brink – The lows, the worries were immersed in every thought I’d think, though this was the finest present anybody could receive, I remember people left behind, who miss him. They still grieve.

But how can I repay him? Take care of it, for a start, spread the message of donation, keep on loving from his heart. For each sunrise that he misses, my eyes cherish these always, I’ll honour him who saved me, the remainder of my days.

Whilst some pen a warmly letter, bunch of flowers, they include others write a card or email to denote their gratitude, for me, I can’t express by words, no phrase that would suffice to thank my donor and his family, who made that sacrifice.

Pledging or donating organs – acts of kindness all year round, because from untimely, tragic losses, something positive is found. So please ponder at those boxes underneath your Christmas tree and know that sometimes the best gifts we get are ones we will not see.
